About Me
I graduated from Edwardsville High School in 2005. As a high school student, I played field hockey and always looked forward to art class. I knew that I wanted to study art and was always interested in teaching. I decided to pursue a degree in Art Education at Western Illinois University. I was able to study abroad in Berlin, Germany for two weeks on a contemporary art trip in 2008. The experience helped to fuel my knowledge of contemporary art and pushed me to strengthen my artwork and my ideas for teaching. I graduated with my bachelors degree in Art Education from WIU in 2009.
I was hired at New Berlin High School in 2009, where I taught 9th-12th grade art until 2017. In the summer months I taught art camps for k-8th grade students at Lincoln Land Community College’s College For Kids.
I completed my Masters of Arts in Art Education from Eastern Illinois University in the Spring of 2016. I joined the fantastic art department at Mehlville High School in the Fall of 2017. Teaching in St. Louis has been a dream.
For me, teaching art isn't just a job, it is my passion. Art is often influencing many aspects of my life, from browsing art blogs to visiting art venues on vacations. Viewing and making art constantly gives me new ideas for my students. Making art has been a constant in my life since childhood. Insects have been a focal point in my artwork since my undergraduate studies. Over the past few years my work has gravitated towards the topic of Alzheimer’s disease, which has affected both sides of my family. I also paint commissioned oil portraits of pets and people. Photography affects most facets of my life, I enjoy documenting time spent with family and friends, as well as taking professional portraits.
My core values as an educator stem from problem solving, visual literacy, and social responsibility. These three items create a strong foundation for successful artists and thinkers. In creating a thoughtful and respectful environment, I am able to maintain a strong but professional rapport with my students. My personal art experiences and travels build my artistic identity and help me to remain engaging and professional.
